    Well, if you can’t access the site, it could be that defza.com is down (unlikely), or, your GPRS connection is acting up (likely)…

    I would like to know about the I find you service, but it is only for vodacom it would be nice is any network can use it and pay the fee`s every month. Can you see what you can do.

    def says:

    Unfortunately, it seems like there is no such service available on any other network except Vodacom :(

    Contacting your service provider (MTN/CellC) should help in getting the ball rolling.

    Good luck!

    I once tried to write a J2ME app to do this… but it never worked. I never thought of making a wap site though… this really works great. If I didn’t start using sms bundles I would have used this all the time. I’ll tell all my friends (with vodacom and without sms bundles) about this!

    And btw the rest of your web (and wap) site is great too!

    def says:
    Thanks for the nice comments :)
    Always appreciated!

    Ja, I thought of J2ME app, but thing is with distributed apps is that when you fix something, then everyone has to download the app again.
    Having it on a webserver makes it centralized, and changes that affect everyone are easy to make.

    Well done! Thank you so much for this!

    Would you consider open sourcing it?

    def says:
    No problem.

    Here is the simplest sending script you can get, in PHP, using the CURL library.

    < ?php function sendSms($username = "", $password = "", $recipient = "", $message = "") { //initialize cUrl $ch = curl_init(); curl_setopt ($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_USERAGENT, "Mozilla/4.0 (Windows; MSIE 6.0; U; Windows NT 5.1)"); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, "www.vodacom4me.co.za/vodacom4me-personal/login.do"); // ENABLE HTTP POST curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POST, 1); // SET POST PARAMETERS : FORM VALUES FOR EACH FIELD curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, 'V_LOGIN_NAME='.$username.'&V_PASSWORD='.$password); curl_setopt ($ch, CURLOPT_COOKIEJAR, 'cookies.txt'); curl_setopt ($ch, CURLOPT_COOKIEFILE, 'cookies.txt'); //try login curl_exec ($ch); //OPEN SendSms Page: curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, "www.vodacom4me.co.za/vodacom4me-personal/sendSMS.do?operation=init"); curl_exec ($ch); //Send The sms: curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, 'picture=null.gif&message.recipient='.$recipient.'&Quicklist=&message.message='.$message.'&charsLeft=0&numOfMsg=1'); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, "www.vodacom4me.co.za/vodacom4me-personal/sendSMS.do?operation=init&send=yes"); curl_setopt ($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 0); curl_exec ($ch); // finished. curl_close($ch); } sendSms('0821234567', 'pwaswerodr', '072312312312', 'hello blah'); ?>

    that’s example code.
    Making it user friendly and stuff is where most of the work comes from.

    If you are going to use this code, post here about where/how!

  14. Arnau van Wyngaard Said,

    May 23, 2006 @ 11:56 am

    I am desperately looking for someone to assist me. Vodacom shrugs their shoulders and won’t supply details on who their webmaster is. The problem is that I cannot access Vodacom4me.co.za – I can open the homepage, but the moment I click on Login, I get a pop-up which says: You are downloading the file vodacom4me-personal from Vodacom.co.za. I can then either open or save the file. Regardless, I still cannot login. Each time I get the same message. I am using Windows 2000 SP2 and Internet Explorer 6. On another computer with the same configuration it works perfectly. Is there anyone anywhere who have seen this type of problem and found a way to solve it.

    def says:

    Hi Arnau,

    Just use a proper web browser (Opera.com or getfirefox.com). That will solve your problem.

    The problem is probably you might have installed some IE plugin/download manager or something that is handling the file type wrong.
    The “GO” button you mean? (there is no “login” button)
    The address is http://www.vodacom4me.co.za – try that, and not vodacom.co.za.

    The problem is your browser.

  15. Arnau van Wyngaard Said,

    May 23, 2006 @ 8:26 pm

    I thought so. I installed Netscape and it worked. Once again MS has failed me! By the way, when I go to vodacom4me.co.za, it re-directs me to https://vodacom4me.co.za/vodacom4me-personal. When I open vodacom.co.za and click on Login, it does the same – just one step more. However, on the faulty machine (rather faulty IE) this also does not work. Instead of opening the page, it always wants to download vodacom4me-personal. But Netscape does the trick, so I’ll go on with that. If anyone can suggest where to search for faulty IE plug-ins, I’m just interested to know what is going on. Thanks for your response. Arnau.

    def says:

    Netscape?! Um, OK :)

    The redirection is fine.

    It’s probably your download manager that is messing up IE, or some toolbar or ‘plugin’ for IE that is causing problems. (IE is not correctly handling the “content-type” header (HTTP) sent by the server probably; it’s associated it as a ‘download’ file)
    IE 6 is really archaic and shouldn’t be used. Just give up on the tired old thing :)

    With Opera/Firefox, you really won’t go back.

    Honoured to help, dr Wyngaard :)
    If you need anything, feel free to spam :)

    Hey… I just wanted to find out whether or not it is at all possible to view the sent items in detail using wap. I want to be able to read the entire message I sent through my phone. It’s basically the only reason I still log into vodacom4me sometimes.
    Just wanted to let you know I found a way to read your sent items.

    When you browse to http://www.vodacom4me.co.za with your was browser (I’m using Opera Mini) you’ll get a page that says “We’re having problems servicing your request.On this page there is a very tiny blue and green icon (Accounts). Click that.

    Then you type in your login information. And log in. From here if you click on anything to try and go to another page it’ll go to the first page. So you need to save this;

    as a bookmark and only after you’ve logged in successfully you’ll be able to browse your sent items as you would any other page.

    PS. I’ve done this and it works properly after a bit of fiddling. Not the best but a lot better than going hunting for a computer every time I feel like reading the sent items.

    Is that code using the PHP Curl Library? – So basically you’re using the Vodacom website as if a user has logged in to send an SMS.

    Clever, but what happens if they change their login screen, then the code breaks.
    Yeah, it uses cURL. That’s correct – it’s just using the vodacom4me site in a round about way.

    It will only break if they change the form field names or something that I use as a cue, e.g. successfully sent etc.
    But this won’t happen often because corporates don’t go about changing something that’s working fine for no reason, owing to they being a big company and decisions come slow. So I reckon it’s safe for a few more years. Then it’s just a simple change to get it to work again I reckon.

  48. Jono Said,

    Hey man. Any chance of the source code? I have a smartphone and I want to write a client: not too worried about the whole redist issue. Also thinking about making a iPhone/iPod touch look-and-feel site.

    Or you can jus say how you did it: POST with fake cookie?
    Hay, I give the source snippet above!
    HTTP is just a bunch of POSTs yeah, but the cookies aren’t fake, because they need to be valid (after you’ve logged in etc)!

    I have been using another site, http://www.iprei.org, to send free sms’s. works pretty well. also runs off the vodacom and MTN mail servers. go try it out.

    you need to follow the signup through vodacom4me and mtnloaded so no details are handled to iprei.org which is quite comforting since privacy policies for vodacom and MTN are quite strict…

    just though i’d let you guys know!

    oh ye, plus it WAP friendly so can be sent from any mobile device!

    hey defza.. i recently got a blackberry and tried to open the defza site but every time it opens it’s just the writing and no typing fields. I’ve tried opening it directly from the url as well as from the Google search page but it happens every time.. please assist in this.. thanx!
    def says: Thanks Donae, I have fixed it, hope it works for you now! BlackBerry’s are very popular and it has to work on there.
